Default WHAT NEXT

I have a 1968 mustang 302. I just bought it off a close family friend for about 8k. It had headers and they were the original owners. I have been to a few auto shows and i saw alot of old classic cars that sounded great. I really liek that rumble sound coming from the engine. When i asked i was told cam and flowmaster. I don't know to much about cars, but i want to learn i was wondering what you guys think. And what models of the flowmaster or cam i need because im not sure i can figure that out on my own haha. Below is a pickture of it and any idea to what to do next are welcome. There are some bumbs under the hardtop i am pretty sure thats rust, i think that will be somthing i want to do to. Please all ideas are welcome

Hey noob. Welcome to the classic section of MF. Those bumps underneath that vinyl cover are rust spots. The sooner you get that vinyl top off and repair that rust the better off you will be. There are several mufflers that will give you that rumble, and many of us have our preferences, but most likely the 40 series flowmasters with an H pipe is what you are looking for. I prefer Ravins, and others prefer Dynomax. I'll have to let others answer regarding the cam. I addition, some long tube headers will not only improve your horsepower, they will also contribute to that low rumble you mention you want.

I have a cam, headers and flowmaster 40 series. In my opinion, that combo is too loud. Its fun to impress the kids in the neighborhood, and works great as an alternate horn if needed, but for a daily driver, just too loud. Keep in mind that rumble is going to be heard inside your car too. My suggestion would go with different series of flowmaster (if you insist on Flomasters). Like I said, and think most will agree, the 40 series are loud.

Yeah, the 40 series are too loud for me, that's why I like my Ravins.

Smothers how long are your tail pipes? If it ends under the car you will have alot of noise inside, if you get them all the way out the back, its not nearly as bad. I just put headers on my daily driver (98 LS1 urged Formula) and with a rusted out flowmaster its very loud everywhere, but with tail pipes it quieted right down. The rest of my old cars have almost no exhuast, they end right before the rear axle. Ridin around is like "WHAT?" "EH?" "HUH?" "YOU SAY SUMTHIN?" you get the idea.

Ty-Adam a sweet cam for a 289/302 isnt a big one. You dont have alot of flow through the heads, nor do you have alot of compression and steep gears. You dont need all that for a driver.

If you go to summitracing.com and put this number in, you will get a decent cam that should give you the sound you are lookin for, and a bit more power too. SUM-K3600
What it is..
Summit Cam and Lifter Kits
Cam and Lifters, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 262/ 272, Lift .448/ .472, Ford, Small Block, Kit
Today $79.95

Something about that size is what you want, unless you plan to make other changes in the engine and the car.

They extend all the way to the back bumper. Man, look at the gas leaking from the cap. That can't be good for the paint.
