Great News
I was going over my 65 stang that I had bought about a month ago today( it is a project car) and discovered that it is a matching numbers car. I flipped. The guy I bought it from said he had it stored in a storage shed and never had the chance to work on it. He told me that it was a matchin car but I didn't completely believe him but then again that would explain why somethings are in the shape they are in.

Hang on guys. There a plenty of "numbers" to match on early cars. All major components had number tags bolted to them, which gave date of manufacture (engine/trans carby/steering rack/etc). Engines/heads etc had casting numbers/dates etc which can be "matched" to when the car was built. but I guess what nooby is talking about here is that his door tag matches the stamped fender vin, and that the car matches what is on the door tag. Good one noob! Give us some details of the car and what you want to do with it.
ok, I admit i'm absolutely ignorant about 'matching numbers'
whats matches? I've got a 66 coupe that has all the little tag things on the transmission, engine, steering box, etc. Is that what you're talking about?

The only matching you can do is date of parts and items included in the mfg of the car per the data plate. A "C" code engine, "C-4" Trans. gears, color, etc. Even without a build sheet (which is gold for anything older than a 67 since the records of 66 back are destroyed.) you have no way of knowing anything. With a build sheet you get it all. Mirror type, wheels, tires, trim, little things, the entire car. Mine must be long gone as I have searched litterally eveything. Seats, dash, trunk, even under the carpet or underlayment. 6"6" is the year. "OE" is Mustang. Part numbers are generic. Every intake is the same base number, only prefix and suffix changes. All are for example 9424. Real numbers matching are cars with numbers stamped and listed on the build sheet as to how the car came. Serial numbers of such. Still, if yours is all there, and all original, it is a plus. If you have a date code newer than the car, obviously the part has been swapped out at some point. Also, be aware, some parts were often "out of stock" so others were used. Falcon parts on Mustangs is not uncommon. You may get an odd air cleaner if the line is moving and the parts are out. They went and grabbed what they had.
When I bought this car I have found every number on the car. I went to my local Ford dealer ship and asked some questions about them, a friend of mine works there. Plus I bought it off the 1 and only owner it has had. I got it for a steal $1300!!! It startedm but since then I have pulled the engine and began work on it. I have done this because I just want to make sure that everything is fine when I start to drive it. I really want to make this my daily driver like soaring here has his for. I would like to keep it a matching but I know that cannot be.
Someone asked me to post would my plans for it are so here it goes. I plan on restoring it to a "stock" car. I mean the only things that aren't going to be stock are those few hidden mods you can do to the engine and tranny. As of right now I don't know if I will be upgrading the brakes and suspension or not. I have very little work to do really. I plan on getting it painted a midnight blue with a ghost racing stripe. Right now the car is a dull red and has some big rust spots that need a lot of attention.
I would like to upload some pictures but the site says that they are to big any suggestion? I am going to try to upload one into this message dont know if it will work this time or not but we will see
