Default Question about 68 Fastback

Hi guys. I wanna buy a 68 fastback. I have been looking for a ’68 for a long time and finally I find one but it isn’t on good shape. The owner told me that the original engine was a Ford 289 with close chambers, +12 and +15 valves, camshaft of 289 degrees and short rods. Now the car has a Boss 302 engine (normal) and a C4 gearbox. The car needs body and paint work and a serious interior work… well the car is to restore. The owner is asking $5000. What do you guys think? Here are some pics of the car.

Default RE: Question about 68 Fastback

It all boils down as to "how bad do you want a 68 Fastback"

It is hard to say from the pix's but it looks resotrable. Is your intent to make it a daily driver or restore for shows? If a daily driver of restomod it would be ok and not cost an arm and a leg to do. For a restore for shows, run away now!!

Every one wants top $ for fastbacks so $5,000 plus or minus a thousand, is what a fixer upperis going for.

Offer $3,250 because it doesn't have the original engine , if he isn't insulted, he is willing to deal. Good Luck[sm=smiley20.gif]

Thanks 65_2plus2. I don't wanna make a show car but I like the appearance of the fastback. I want to combine the old appearance and put in it new things. I'd like to obtain from 400 to 500hp and 500 lbs of torque. What do you recommend me?

The next questions are:
How much do you want to spend???
How much of the work do you do, vs a speed shop???
Do you want 400-500HP full time or will a 350HP with 150HP Nitrous Oxide boost do???
It all gets back to Money and access to parts.

I don't know how much money I want to spend because is a long time project but the less I spend is better for me..... I'd like to do the all work but in some moment I'll have to go to a speed shop. I want 400-500 hp all the time may be 350hp I prefer not to use NOS for now

you better check the cowl for rust, as well as the floorboards, they rust too. You need a solid foundation whether you intend it to be a daily driver, or restomod.

If the body is decent and it runs why not. Also if it really is a Boss 302 that is not original for 68 but it sounds like you dont care about that. Honestly why do you want 500hp, spend tons of money and never get to use it. My 289 is nowhere 500 and not even 300 and is plenty quick and I have plenty of speeding tickets over the past 25 years in it. If you buy it drive it with the 302 then decide if you even need a different engine and use the money for body and interior work, nothing worse than a fast car that looks like sh**. Most of the time you are showing it off sitting still.

I agree with you Quig "nothing worse than a fast car that looks like sh**" if I buy it the first thing I'll do is work on body and interior and also make the engine looks decent and clean and may be latter I’d like to obtain at least 350hp. Thanks for the advice I’ll check the cowl, the floorboards and the shock towers…
