Looking to buy
I am 16 years old and about to become 17 and get my license (hopefully) but I don't know much about cars, although i love the classic mustangs especially the 64 1/2 to 67's and i would love to purchase one as a first car, so i would love one that i could drive right away but I would like to know some pointers on what to look for in a car this old, so that it doesn't give me to many problems and that i would have a good enough car that i could possibly upgrade it (performance wise) while not having to spend a lot on repairs. So anyway what are some key problems that would be too much work for me to tackle myself on a cashier/ worker in a family restraunts salary. What should i be looking for?
P.S If anyone knows someone in P.A who is looking to sell my dream car please don't wait to let me know!!!!!
P.S.S I did find a convertable 66' mustang with an all original engine ( a little Rusy) and a nearly pristine interior it was manual transmissin and made an obnoxious tapping. What could this be from?

It sounds like you found a great hobby, you will have a lot of fun over the years with this Mustang stuff. I think you should really hit the books at school and put all of your effort into homework and studies, when you get great reports I am sure your dad will buy you a great car to get started and together you will have many years of fun, restoring or modding, racing Mustangs as a father and son racing Mustang team!
Please Somebody out there must be able to help me!! for the love of Mustangs someone Help stat my mustang heart needs needs something to help it keep on tickin'!
P.S. Thanx Pop!!!! (You find a very suttle way of telling me to study everywhere)(Darn you chemistry- the only thing that i did good was when we were talking about combustion engines well the chemistry of it lol)

Hey RichMc87Classicstang. Glad to see you have a love for Mustangs they are really very cool cars & a GREAT hobby. My daughter got bitten too, She spent $800.00 to buy her car and about 3 grand keeping it running for the past year & she needs to put another 3 grand into it . ( for a car she can only drive 6 months outta the year ) Her dad & I do all the work on it for free but she has to buy the parts. I read your post you don't want a Mustang you want a miracle. Lets point out a few thing you are talking about owning a 40 year old car. Cars are mechanical, stuff breaks on them ALL the time. If you don't have advanced mechanical ability not only is it going to get expensive but frustrating. Also you live in Pa. it snows there classic mustangs + snow = BADDDDDDD THINGS. So it won't be a car you can drive year around. Old Mustangs are also NOT the safest cars on the road either, 40 year old safety is a joke compared to more modern cars. The car you are talking about buying will cost you between 8-10 thousand dollars. Have you decided if you would like a coupe, fastback, rag top? there are HUGE price variations between body styles. Not to mention the cost of insurance for a teenager to drive a mustang . example my daughter will be 17 in July she has a 1978 mustang II 2+2 nothing fancy no mods to it just a lil factory 4 popper, it costs her $1200.00 a year just for PLPD ( property & liability ) insurance. I would highly suggest that you get a beater car for your first car learn about cars, save your money get some driving skills, decide what kind of Stang you want, Hang out at the Mustang forum to learn some stuff. & Your dream will come true. I wanted a Mustang every since I was 4 years old my first car was a 75 Mustang II that got totaled, it took me 10 years to find & buy the car I really wanted. my 64 1/2 is my total dream car it took 8 years & about 9 thousand dollars to restore it . But now I get to drive it take it to cruises & shows, to get groceries etc. . It'll be featured on "My Classic car" with Dennis Gage. Also now I have a 1970 fastback too , this car doesn't need as much work as the 64 1/2 did & I got it for 10 thousand dollars but its in GREAT shape & un-restored all that has been done to it , is that it has been repainted.
Now you may think I'm peeing in your parade But if you want your dream to come true you need to be realistic.

hey glad ur taking an intrest in mustangs, if your looking for stang in good condition if would be around 5g's, the convertible thats a great car...i havent seen some around in my hood, little rust on it no problem can be fixed easily you just gots to know how to fix it. now the problems;u live in p.a. shea64 is right about the mustang plus snow they dont mix but usually suspenion is sometimes a problem then tend to ware out and u need to replace some of the parts thats if ur gonna use it as a daily driver but something will always brake so dont think that no matter how much u take care of it sumthing will break, before i had my stang as a daily driver it was fine as long as you took care of it, now my friends car man he abused his 67 and man did he mess up his suspenion big time i mean the car is like an old lady lol you have to take care of it everyday hahah. now for upgrading ur engine, if ur going to use the as a daily driver but you want some power i would go with the edelbrock powerpakages, it would give u about a 300+ hp also another thing is how much are you willing to spend on the car. my saying is ur paying for what you are getting i mean u dont want cheap parts and they keep breaking all the time. so i mean if u want good parts you gots to spend a good qaulity of money but i mean its worth it in the end...

look in truck thet bad about rust at the rear spring perches also floor boards,, check them before anything else ,i live in the south looked at 3 of them all rust buckets,,,,got my wife an 85 gt instead,,back then but she wanted a 65 66 67 ,,told her there were no good..she liked her 85gt untill some old lady totaled it out
O.K.-1st off, welcome. a classic Mustang is an excellent car, however for a first car, I'm not so sure. Anyway, to get one in condition enough to drive everyday, it's going to run around 4-5 grand at least. The thing to look out for is RUST! It's the Mustang's worst enemy because it loves to eat away at these cars(floors, front and rear frame rails, cowl vent, lower door section, rear 1/4 panels, trunk floors, around the base of the windshield, battery tray area,etc....). Snow is another factor-the Mustang is light and sucks in snow(trust me, I know). Insurance for a 17 year old will be expensive also.
I'm by no means trying to talk you out of getting one, I'm just pointing out some of the bad points.
The only advice I can give is to look at several cars and do research. This will arm you with the correrct knowledge to get what you want. Here are some reading suggestions:
1)Mustang Monthly magazine-It's a good source of info/tech articles
2)How to Restore Your Mustang-This book has good info and pictures
3)Mustang Weekend Projects #1 and #2
4)This website as well as www.vintage-mustang.com and www.fomoco.com
Also, don't go off and buy the 1st or 2nd car you see just because it has a V-8 enginne-Big mistake-look over a few different cars before deciding.
The noise you heard is probably a lifter or rocker arm tap-if it's extremely loud, not good-a slight tap is normal for an old engine.

Well I'm still looking for my dream stang and and have absorbed a lot of advice from all you gr8 people and also from my father so I guess I' have to postpone my dream and just be smart and get a beater and then get my dream car which Iwill give up for no one!!! I wam going to keep my eyes peeled though!!! Also I would like to thank everyone for your input because you think that your rents aren't being reasonable until you hear from like twenty other people that you know have to be cool because they own mustng and whats cooler than that (nothing). Oh yeah congrats shesa64 about ur car being featured in my classic car!! That Rocks!! P.S Shesa64 give your daughter a high five for me for not buying a ricer and buying all american muscle!! She'll make a great wife someday!!!
