Default Under hood surface rust?

What should I do about the surface rust starting to form on the bottom part of my hood? I want to stop things like this BEFORE they become a problem.

two choices, a wire wheel (or regular sand paper) or por-15. personally i would clear as much out with a piece of sand paper and than paint brush some por-15 over it. the guys here seem to swear by it, so it must be great.

so are you just going to por15 over it or you going to scrub some off and than use this stuff?

i personally believe what everyone says about this being a great product and doing what it claims, but IMO, it would be worth it to kinda sand it down a little, knock some of that crap off of there and than use the por15.

The directions tell you to get rid of loose paint and the big chunks, but for it to work at its' fullest potential, you need to leave the rust. I know it's hard to make yourself do that, but it is a rust encapsulator, and needs rust present to work. It chemically changes the rust to your benefit.

that's just a hard concept to accept, for me at least. that's like the amish using a computer. LOL! but, i am here to learn as well as help, and all of you are saying the same thing so it must be true.

its just super light surface rust so I think I can stomache leaving it on! Any guesses for how much of this stuff it would take to coat the bottom of a 68? I'm thinking about power washing it and doing an undercoating in fazes... like 1/4 of the car at a time.

Read the directions. It will tell you how much it will cover. You want to use 2 coats. And, if you have nice shiny metal, you don't need to use POR 15 on it. So, that might save you some.

I just got done sand blasting my rear axle and I got the tracking number for my por15. It'll be here on thursday so should I use that on the rear axle? it has only minor spots that didn't get blasted all the way to the metal.
