Carb question
So i already have a edelbrock performer intake and i'm looking for a 4 barrel carb to go with it. Does anybody have any recomendations? Price is kind of a concern and with this add on about how much hp will be gained?
Depends on how much you know about carbs.
If you're fairly green, get an Edelbrock. Their manual is very good and they are easy to work with.
If you know what you're doing, or are willing to learn a lot, get a Holley. They have a lot of tuning options and a lot of aftermarket support, though not as much since Barry Grant started making Demons.
For a little more money, you could get a BG Street Demon. Very tunable and much more modern looking than Holley.
My personal preference is for Holley's, but that's mainly because I have a lot of spare parts and tuning kits for 'em.
Size wise, 600 cfm is more than enough for most 289's (7000 rpm pretty easy). A 500 cfm can get you close to 6000 rpm.

I didn't mean to make them sound easy to tune. [sm=gobble.gif] They just have several options when it comes to tuning, like a Holley.
For your basic street driver and for a person that isn't trying to extra every last ounce of performance, the Edelbrock is the way to go. If you like to fiddle and get things just perfect, then Holley or Demon (of course, a weather system will move in and allow you to tweak your carb some more...but that's why we have 'em

Some 289's came with a 4bbl. Typically an Autolite 4100, which is regarded as one of the best 4bbls ever made. I have had one on an old mustang of mine and it performed very well. Easy to tune and rebuild and available relatively cheep on ebay. A rebuild kit, will cost you less than $30, and some ime and you will have a very reliable carb.

This is the finest four-barrel carburetor that has yet to be made by anybody. In performance, reliability, and fuel economy it is simply state-of-the-art. It will "blow away" anything that holley has yet to make. There are several subtle engineering changes that we do to this carburetor to make the secondaries perform even better than the day they left the factory.
I prefer Edelbrock, They are easier to tune and you don't have to take the carb apart to do it. If you have a stock 289, go with a 500. If you have a mild worked 289 with no after market parts, go with a 600 - 650. If you have heads, cam and headers, go with a 700 - 750..
