Default right rear tire locking

recently my 66 with right rear tire (drum brakes) began locking up very easily when breaking. the weird thing is that when i hit the breaks it locks up even when i release the break pedal ( i realize that drum breaks purposefully jam, so maybe that could be the cause) however than you can feel the break still on as i drive for about another ten yards. at first i was thing maybe a proportioning valve issue, but the staying locked makes me believe its something mechanical like bad springs. but i really dont know and any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be several things. That's why you need to take the hub off, clean everything up then inspect it. It could be the wheel cylinder hanging or the shoes grabbing due to excessive brake dust or brake fluid if the wheel cylinder is leaking, etc. You could also be running metal to metal if the shoe is worn down sufficiently, which would tend to make it grab.

exactly. i'm not sure what mine was on my 89 but it was either the cylinder or something with the e-brake not fully releasing. by the sounds of what you are saying, it's probable the cylinder, but do check the other things mentioned by other members, they are also very feasable.

Is the master brake cylinder a common thing to die on our classic mustangs? Because last night on my way home i pretty much lost power brakes lol. It wasnt fun. In addition my right rear drum brake has been locking up tempermentally when medium-high braking

i'm sure, like all things in this world, they are bound to start to fade with time. your losing the power may be a small amount of air in the system and your locking up may be a bad cylinder. you sould crack it open and take a look at the cylinder.

When you open it up, I think you may find rear-end grease from a leaking axle seal. If not, re-build or replace your wheel cylinder and make sure everything is dry and clean.
