Power cuts out when brakes applied
Hi,
I have a 1969 Mustang with a 302. It has a Mallory ignition box with a breakerless dist. I also just installed a new 1-wire 100amp alternator. The alternator and ignition system i just installed this week. I have checked to see if there are any vacumm leaks with a vacumm guage but there were none. About 15 minutes into the drive today the car just flat out died, not stumbling or anything, just flat out died. I went to crank it and the battery was too weak. I have to jump the car and finally got it started and running. I noticed that every time i hit the brakes the power for the lights, and guages and radio go out thne come back on. Along with that the car hesiates for a second and if i dont give it gas it will stall. It seems that by just applying the brakes it sucks all of the power from the car. I was thinking that it could be the battery. The battery in there is about a year old, but has been drained down to the point that it was dead atleast 20 times. Over the winter we had some trouble with it starting and were constaly cranking the car as we tested everything, so it was drained down atleast 20 times. I cant let the car sit for more than a day with out it being to weak to crank. Do you think that the battery could be to blame, or is it maybe the alternator. With the 1-wire alternators, you cna just run the waire directly to the batter positive terminal right?
Sorry it is a long post, but any advice is appericiated!
