Default 65 automatic

I have an 1965 Mustang fastback that I am in the process of putting back together. It has 289/auto, I've gone through the engine and now it's time for the transmission. Are the early C4's difficult to rebuild/ Is it the sort of job best left to a shop. This car was bought new by my brother in law so I am the second owner, has been through lots of kids and everything is pretty much worn out but if I can get it back running and driveable it will make things a lot easier.
Thanks
Patrick

Take it to a good shop. You don't want to try that yourself.

I would also recommend taking it to a shop. I just had me C4 rebuilt for about $525 but that was with a 3000 stall converter. It runs SWEET!! Instead of using the stock '65 trans that I could manually shift into "L", "2", or "D", I took one out of my '66 that I could manually shift to "1", "2", or "D". Much better for just your average street racing. Your rebuild should only cost you around $350 - $400 tops. My converter was almost $200.

Sorry. I meant that the '65 original trans I could only shift into "L" and "D".

Thought that would be the answer, I really did not want to tie into this myself. So off to the shop it goes.
Thanks

Yeah, your C4 should have three definite gears. If your second gear is not not working, it's time for a rebuild. But, first check you linkage to make sure everything is hooked up.
