Default engine swap

i baught a 65 mustang(289) from a guy and the engine was sizied so i got a engine out of a 86 mustang(302) and i was going to put back together with te balencer off of the 289 so i wouldnt have to buy a new pulley. ive been told that it that it has to be 56oz or somthing like that but i looked in summit and they have all diff. weights. i was woundering if yall could advise me on this? Also im planing on using the old fly wheel but i dont know if it has to be a certain weight and will the distributar out of the 289 work in the 302?

The 86 wont have the same pully but after market suppliers can fix you up. You will need the right flex plate also

you need a 50oz balancer and a 50oz flexplate. you can get a balancer from summit or others that have the 3 and 4 bolt hole setups on them so you can use your 65 pulley.

Just a little clarification. Only 302's after about mid-1980 are 50oz. Earlier models are 28oz.

This is a very practical swap if you pay attention to the other posts as well as mine.
You must use the 86 front balancer. You will not be able to use the 289 pulleys, water pump, and alternator mounting brackets.
(I can send you detailed photos of this swap and installation if you wish)
I used early 70s style 302 pulleys, waterpump, and alt brackets. Single groove pulleys driving the pump and alt. No other accessories.
The bummer about this is the water pump outlet is on the driverside so you will have to take your radiator to the shop and have the lower neck relocated to the opposite side. They can do this for about $50, but you should splurge and get a new unit anyway.

You will also need an early 302 timing cover, dipstick, fuel pump eccentric. The 289 pieces might work also with some minor mods.

Use the 289 oil pan and oil pump pick up tube.

Plug up the dipstick hole in the 86 block.

As the others say: Never ever ever put an early distributor in a later roller cam block. I've seen it done and I've seen the results.
I wont get into that issue now.

The back of the motor depends on what tranny you have. My experience is with AOD and T-5 swaps.
Assuming that you do have a manual transmission, the 86 block was not cast with the mounting boss for the equalizer bar pivot. You have to make one or buy one (is available).

You may very well have to buy a new flywheel that is balanced for the 86 but is drilled to mount an early clutch.

I think this is the bulk of it.

Go for it...

Proformance make a balancer for the 50oz with both bolt patterns so you can use your orginal pulleys. MSD and Crane make a steel dist gear which has to be used. Your flywheel is 157 teeth. These are also available in the 50oz size. I have done many of the change overs. Reuse your original timing cover, install your fuel pump eccentric.
