Default I6 vs v-8 spindles?

Hello all,

So I again I have a 67 Mustang coupe. It originally had an I-6 200 engine and a 3 speed manual transmission. It was the lowest of the low model mustangs, no options, nothing. One of the people who had the car before me put in a V-8 289 engine and a C-4 automatic. However that is about all the did. They did not change out the weak 7 1/4 rear end, they did not change out the brakes, all 4 wheels still have 4 lug drum brakes. They did not change out any suspension components, nothing. To the best of my knowledge they did not even change out the spindles, but I am not sure.

So here is my question: How can I tell if I have I6 or v-8 spindles, I am sure that the v-8 spindles are stockier and bigger but I have nothing to compare them to. Is there any tell tale sign that they are one or the other?

Also I am trying to fix this mess and slowly as I have money. The first step will be to compeletely rebuild the suspension. I am probably going with the superstarter suspension kit from mustangs plus. It has pretty much everything I need. Then a litlle later this summer it will be a ford 9 inch rear end. Then when I a little more money built up, a SSBC front disc brake conversion kit.

So my next question is this: If I have I-6 spindles do I have to change those out to v-8 spindles when I change out the suspension here in a few weeks or can I wait until I do the brake conversion? Also I believe that I can keep the 4 lug wheels until I change out the brakes as well or do I need to switch those out when I rebuild the suspension?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

67 was the first year that the I6 and V8 spindles are the same. You do not need to change them. You can change the suspension and stay with the 4 lug wheels if you stay with the I6 drums. Once you upgrade the brakes you will need 5 lug wheels. Everything on the suspension is the same between I6 and V8 except the springs are a different rate. Don't change your suspension just becasue you have the V8 now. If you like the stance of the front end you could even stay with the same springs.

Hey all,

Thanks a bunch, that really helps out a lot. I was wondering why I saw parts listed separately for 65-66 I-6 and V-8s, and then both together for 67! You all rock, this saves me time and money. I think I'll move right on to building a 9inch rear end and leave the suspension for now!

That is one I had to figure out on my own. Glad to pass on the info.
