If you are only doing small patches at a time, then get a premium self etching primer in a rattle can. But, if you are doing the whole car at once, use a sprayer.
Here is an example of a decent self etching primer.

Yeah, if the surface is not completely smooth, then use a high build primer so you can sand, add more primer, sand, etc.

get a premium primer from the autoparts store or wal-mart (3.50 as opposed to a 1.00) Spray a couple of coats. Get some scratch filler, put over small pin holes and scratches. Sand, paint with primer and repeat. NOTE: body filler goes on bare metal or other body filler; scratch filler goes on primer.

I got some decent etching primer for fiberglass for 14 bucks a can, but you can get the cheap stuff at Walmart for 96 cents. I dont see the difference really...

self etching primer is a good deal but will not seal off moister! it after a while will break down because it is designed to be top coated with paint. if i was you i would decide what kind of paint products you plan on using (ie. dupont, sikkens, basf, so on) and go to the paint shop where you plan on buying it and get some of their spray can primer that way the paint materials match, i now sikkens does have some that match their paint materials. if you use a bunch of different kinds of primer you will have to strip it all off and re-prime the entire car or when you paint it the new paint will most likely not want to stick and lift off. remember do it right once and its alot cheaper then doing it twice and paint products are not designed to be mixed and last long. thats my two or three cents.
