Default Ventilation system

Hello guys. I finally decided to get to my ventilation system on my 68. I had the car for few months now, and the system was not working properly.
Last night I took instrument panel off along with anything else that was in the way. The damage: the center air outlet ducting is ripped. The side air outlets ducting are in pieces. But all that is replaceable. The question is about valves that control the gates( doors) that control air distribiution. Those valves are connected with the selector via rubber hoses. I read in Shop Manual that it is a vacuum system that controls those valves, but: where is the vacuum created from and how it all suppoused to be connected together? I expected a set of cables that would move the levers on the valves, but that would be too easy.[:-].
Do you guys know any places where I can find informations on the ventilation system, diagrams, pictures, or any tech articles? I am willing to work and got some time (I got 5 days before wife comes back with kids); just no clue how it is suppoused to work!! Thanks in advance!
