Creat vs Machine shop
OK if I was building a 408 stroker which would you choose to go with a Create motor out of a catalog and no work OR get with a GOOD Machine shop and have a guy custom build you one....money no object here..
Crate motors are no different than a locally built motor. They are made in shops too which most will build according to your specs, but the motor is crated and shipped to you, hence the name. If you local machine shop built your motor and shipped it to you I would call that a crate motor as well.

I would go with a GOOD local machine shop. Talk to people to get references to a good shop in your area. This way you can work cloely with them on a personal level and tell them what you want, and they can build to suit. In my opinion, a purchase like that is too big and important to do over the internet on on the telephone.

+1 How many local shops have experience with Windsor strokers? If they know what they're doing and are familiar with what needs to be modified, then go local. Otherwise, go for the guys that have more experience...
Go local and support them. If you have any issue in a few years with it they will be happy to help. If you buy a crate motor and have issues you either have to deal with the company you bought it from or suffer the humiliation of taking it to the shop that you didn't choose to go to first and have them tell you you should have went with them.
If your looking to just get a motor and not wanting to discuss ideas with someone face-to-face then go with the crate. Crate or local will get you the same motor...

I have a complete brand new ready to be assembled 428 Windsor for sale. Very nice item and will withstand about anything you want to through at it. Short block complete. $5500. Dart Block, Scat crank, Eagle rods, Total seal rings, Diamond pistons. All new and balanced .
If money was not an issue, I would reseach which machine shop in my area has experience with building classic Mustang engines, then sit down with them and discuss what all the options were. If I didn't like their ideas, I would go to the next shop and repeat my enquiry. Usually, the race shops will give you the best answers because they build race engines for a living, not just street engines in a mass production genre. Howerver, as mentioned, there is absolutely nothing wrong with shopping online for a crate engine that fits your needs and budget. It's not like crate engines use inferior parts.
