Emergency starting procedure???
Hi Guys, my 68 mustang would not start when I turned the key, but had religiously until then. The battery and all seemed fine until then also. I could turn the key all the way to the right and NOTHING, except for the radio. I let her sit a while and she atarted right up and every time after that. What I am looking for is what steps to take incase this happens again so I can get it home and test to see if it's the solenoid or starter. Do I just turn the key to the on position, open the hood and put a screwdriver between the two small plugs on the front of the solenoid?? Or would someone have to hold the key all the way to the right in the start position?? I also thought it could be the neutral safty switch?
Thanks,
Thanks,
Sounds like neutral safety. If it is, take a jumper from the (+) side of the battery to the (I) terminal on the solenoid and the engine will crank. If it doesn't, the solenoid is bad and you need to jump across the BIG terminals...which is kinda hard on metal objects[sm=outcold.gif], but will work in a bind...

If I jump between the large cables, will the car start and stay running, or do I have to leave the key in the "run" position before I jump it. What I want to avoid id driving it somewhere and not being able to get home.
Thanks
Thanks
Lots of times the starter on these old cars take a crap when it's hot out. I just went through this on one of my dads old cars. And it always happens as you explained it. Have someone sit in the drivers seat and hold the key to "start." Get something long and hard and tap on the front of the starter. It will generally start right up. It is time to replace the starter however.
