My dad and I think it is fine, but I just wanted the opinion of the community. The teeth are just slightly chipped in some areas where the starter grabs on. Take a look at the pics and tell me what you all think. We are almost ready to put the engine back into the car.

I'd replace it. OEM type replacements don't cost that much at the parts store.

You dont have to, but its not a bad idea. And BTW thats called a flexplate, only manual cars have flywheels.

you have it out. Why NOT change it? It's inexpensive for the part but a real pain if you have to tear back into it later on. Besides the few chipped teeth just have to hit the starter once the right way and you'll mess up the bendix on the starter.

Yeah, I have to agree. Replace it while you have it out.

I'm about ready to change mine out for the second time in a month. Change it out while you have it out. Make sure the starter is good (bad teeth and you'll change it again soon). My prob was the bellhousing. The bolt holes are stripped so I thought that I could run bolts alll the way through and lock washer it. It doesn't work. The torque of the starter will work the bolts loose and you'll chew up the starter and flywheel. Just a heads up from my massive problems.

Why replace it? Just replace the ring gear and stick'er back in. If you wanted to save you duckets, you could just remove the ring gear, flip it over, and stick'er back on.

+1 on replacing it or just the ring gear. If you wear the teeth more the start may not engage and you will damage the gear on the starter as well. It is out now, so now is the time to do it. Check your starter as well.
Good luck

Thanks guys I'll talk to my dad. I beleive we are replacing the starter, or just having it rebuilt. The idea is to build a reliable car that i can drive to and from school (20mins-half hour). So far we have a new waterpump and of course the rebuilt engine that we just got back. We are probably gonna get our carb rebuilt, which will eventually be replaced by like a holly or something. It should all work out fine and dandy
