Alternator Pulley
Anyone got any tricks to getting the nut off the alternator shaft to take the pulley off? The shaft has an allen wrench opening in the end to hold the shaft with an allen wrench, while you try to turn the nut with a wrench. But I'm man enough to admit that I wasn't man enough to budge the thing!! [:@]
Use a crescent wrench on the allen wrench. Have the "L" part of the allen wrench on top, then use the crescent on the small part of the "L" to get maximum leverage. Now, why in the world do you want the pulley off the alternator?
Thanks...
I've just about finished my rebuild... with a shiny new "Old Ford Blue" paint job on the block
... a chrome intake...
new black and brushed aluminum valve covers and air breather...
old carb, but polished to a shine...
and one nasty and rusted looking alternator.[:@]
So, I had the bright idea of taking the pulley and fan off, give them a good work over with the wire brush and then a coat of gloss black. Then taking the front and end covers off, giving that little one inch strip in the middle a good work over with the wire brush and a coat of gloss black... and then a polish job on the aluminum front/rear covers.

I just finished restoring my engine compartment, and tried to get my alternator cleaned up too. I scrubbed it with everything I thought would clean it up good, then I painted it silver. For the pulley, I wire wheeled it, then scrubbed the hell out of it with Brasso. Here's how it turned out.

Wrap a towel around the alt fan to hold it in place and use a 1/2" impact gun. It's not the power but the "hammering" that loosens the nut up (kind of like the Three Stooges! Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck).
A cold 6 pack at your local tire shop will probably get it removed real quick like.

OK, I finally got my impact wrench back and was able to "knock" the nut off in just a few seconds. Buttttt, I assumed that once I had that nut off, the fan and pulley would be on a carter key or something and just slide off. But they ain't wanting to budge either.
Anyone know of anything special needs to be done to get the fan and pulley to come off after the nut is off?
I believe I'm gonna go Soaring's route and paint it once i get it off.
