Nothing like the sound of Ravins...... not as quiet as super turbo (dynomax)..... and not as loud as 80 series (flowmaster). very deep rumble at idle. good growl under acceleration, and definatly no drone on the highway.

well, im in no way, shape or form any kind of expert, but, i do know that you want at least 4" exaust pipes. the bigger the better from what i have heard. again, i am probably wrong, but i had to give my 2 cents. worth
Sheesh I have 4 inch pipes on my deisel....you don't need that size for a gas street car.

With 2.25 inch pipes and a healthy built 289 you can have a lot of fun and a lot of power

Sounding good DS. If anybody is remotely interested in the Ravin mufflers, Midas carries them, and you can hear sound clips on their website. They have three models of Ravin mufflers. Z-77 which is a stock muffler sound, z-55 which would be near a 40 series Flowmaster, and their ticket getting z-33 for the guys who want a loud muffler.

A stock 289 will be happy with 2" exhaust. Smaller pipes will give a higher pitch sound (1.75" pipes with cherry bombs...old school). A 2.25" pipe with something like the Edelbrock RPM muffler will give you good flow and a deep throaty rumble.

My favorite exhuast system sound is a Top Fuel dragsters zoomies... not terribly practical on the street but OH SO OMG!

Dont go over 3" there is no need, a 2.5 system wont cost you a first born son and will provide plenty of clearance. I dont like the sound of flowmasters, too much like a tin can, I prefer the sound of Dynomax mufflers, but that is just me.

I think 2 1/2 inch with Long-Tube Headers is more than enough unless running a supercharged Dart or World 427 Small Block. For performance & sound, see the SpinTech Mufflers (they're available in Stainless), a test done by NASCAR showed them as the only mufflers that did not adversely effect horsepower. My son's 02 w/'Charged DOHC 5.4 Lincoln engine has a set of their side exhaust units & I just put a pair of their mufflers behind Kooks long tubes, high-flow cats & X-pipe on my Roush (had to do some welding since Roush exhaust exits in a different location than normal GT).

Youch!!! I've got a pretty stout little 289 and I've got 2.25" pipes. You need some back preasure; and at 4 inches, you'll have none. I don't think there is even room enough over the rear axle for such a pipe! If you've got under 300 horses, all you need is 2.25" pipes - guaranteed.

Agreed. The biggest pipe I have seen bent up and over the 8" rear is 3" exhaust tubing (I believe flowmaster sells a full 3" exhaust system but it is rediculous $$$). I would say anything sitting around 250-300hp would be fine with 2 1/4".....above 300 I would say 2 1/4"-2 1/2".
