Default engine clicking...

hey fellas,

my 68' stans motor clicks, it sounds like when you put a playing card on your bike when you were younger to make it sound like a motor cycle. any suggestions. after running it for about 20 minutes, or after the thermomoter opens up it stps clicking. but if you turn it off and let it cool down the clicking comes back. any thoughts?

Do you have headers? If you do it could be a bad header gasket. but then again that doesnt make sense since the ticking goes away after the engine is warmed up.

You need to adjust your tappets.

Frequently this noise is made a valve that needs to be adjusted. However, since it goes away when the engine gets warm, that doesn't really make sense either. Are you sure it isn't external to the engine such as a fan blade striking something or your alternator or power steering pump? Tough one!

AH, I forgot many of you guys are just younguns. A tappet is an old school term for part of the rocker arm. The reason why it quits clicking when it gets warm, is that the oil finally makes it's way up there. What kind of oil pressure are you running? My guess is that it is low. Here's a dictionary defininition of Tappet.

It could also be a lifter going bad try the tappet first if it comes back or does not fix it replace that lifter.
