Re-seating the stud is pretty easy, they are pressed in. However, the only way the pushrod could get bent and the stud pulled out is if the valve came into contact with the piston. You can re-seat the stud by running the rocker nut down until it bottoms, take a deep socket that is just larger than the diameter of the stud place it over the stud and use it as a driver to tap it down into the head with a hammer. Be very careful not to damage the threads. You may get lucky and not have a bent valve but I have a feeling you'll be removing that head in the near future.

Bump the motor... means turn it over with the ignition wire off? just like a compression test?

Your feeling is right. I tap the rocker stud...no luck... it didn't go down further.. So I cheated and built up the clearance with a couple of washers.
followed the directions on putting the rocker back and lashing...etc.
It looks like the spring / valve isn't going down at all... what's worst is, it pulled the stud further out when the rod pushed up. Lucky the rod didn't bend.

So... off to research on how to pull the head.
