66 Mustang Fuel Gauge ??
Hello,
I resently bought a '66 Mustang with a nonworking gas gauge> it read "E" all the time. I pulled the Gauge pod and ran a continuity check on the fuel gauge. NO CONTINUITY> So I bought another gauge....put it in and wiring it up. When I turn the key on, the gauge shoots straight to FULL... the tank is nearly Empty...[:@]
I pulled the wire on the sending unit, thinking it may be getting grounded out somewhere, but the gauge still shoots straight to FULL.
I put a meter on the wires that connect to the fuel gauge ( NEG to BLACK/GREEN WIRE, POS to YELLOW/WHITE wire) and it pulses to the negative side of the scale,.... by "pulses" I mean it bounces as though it were connected to a turn signal flasher.....[&:]
If I swap the meter wires I get a pulse that goes from 0v- 12v-0v-12v...etc
I am wonder what the problem might be,.... INSTRUMENT CONSTANT VOLTAGE REGULATOR is bad???
I havent checked it yet. Any tips and trouble shooting this problem would be appreciated.
HELP??!?! thanks!
RON

Well,
The gauge was not grounding on the holder, although I do need a new voltage regulator now,... I saw it glowing red and smoking,... I don't think I should've loosed up the gauge holder posts and turned the key on.......[>:]

there is a tab with 2 holes that goes across the poles that the 2 nuts go down on, I would assume this is just a hold down strap????
There is nothing I recognize as insulators. Are they rubber or what....and where exactly are they??
That could be the problem,... please advise, thanks!!

humm, well then, yes, it is on there..... I am going to check the wiring tomorrow to see if there are any breaks in it from the sender to the gauge. Also check the ground that attaches with the wiper motor wires,....
