Project Update as I go
I'll use this thread to update my Mustang project until I'm through with it (might take several years!!)
I purchased my Mustang on May 22, 2006. I believe it is a 65, but that's a whole other story! See my previous post about it!
I haven't really done a lot to it since I purchased it, other than scraping off all of the tint. The past two weekends I have started stripping the paint. Last weekend (8-19-06) I started on the trunk lid and finished it with a grey primer.
This weekend (8-26-06) I started stripping the LH rear quarter panel. I used Aircraft stripper, a orbital sander, and lots of elbow grease. Aircraft stripper is a man's best friend when it comes to stripping paint.
Anyway, here are the pics from the day I bought it til now:
Pic 1: May 22 the day I purchased it.
Pic 2: May 22 the tail end of it.
Pic 3: Aug 26 trunk already stripped and primed (will eventually need a new trunk lid due to rust in RH lower corner)
Pic 4: Aug 26 LH rear portion of quater panel stripped down and sanded.
Pic 5: Aug 26 RUST (OH NO!) maybe this is the the worst of it!! I doubt it!

Pic 1: After another 10 minutes of sanding the entire quarter panel is down to metal other then around the side ornament. It took a total of about 1.5 hours to strip the area between the LH door and mid ways over the wheel well.
Question: How does the side ornament come off?
Thanks,
Kris

They bolt on from the backside.. remove the rear seat, then the kick panel next to the seat and with enough light you should be able to see the nuts.
Looks like you are doin a fine job...
Fun isnt it? Just wait, it gets better... lol

Yes, it is a lot of fun minus the blisters!
Right now, I'm working about 6 hours each weekend on it and 2 during the week. I figure it will take me a total of about 100-120 hours to get all of the panels stripped and primed. So it should be ready for body work in about 3-4 months.
I'm going to replace the trunk lid with a used one in better condition. The LH and RH rear portion of the quarter panels will have to be patched. Both doors have some rust holes in them and I'm trying to figure out if it will be cheaper to order new skins or patch the existing panels. Also, some PO put a nice hole in the top of the LH quarter panel for an antanea, so that will have to be patched too.
How much do you think it will cost to patch both rear portions of the quarter panels and then a 1.5" hole on top of the rear quarter panel?

You can get aircraft stipper at WalMart in the automotive section. It is about $7.50 for a quart of it. So far I have used it on the trunk and quarter panel and still have about 1/3 left.
I figure it will take about 1 gallon to do the entire car.

It took me 2 gallons of stripper to do a 71 Firebird to bare metal. It had a bunch of paint on it.
How much it costs to fix metal is directly related to how much you can do on your own.. Less you can do costs you more.
