Are you considering synthetic for longer change intervals? or for better protection?

I've never used synthetic simply because of price. I've also taken OEM motors past the 250k mile mark as well. Unless you're looking for longer change intervals, it may not be cost affective as regular Vavoline.

Also note that even tho some synthetics claim longer intervals, you'll want to get a filter that also offers that same thing. Most filters are the standard 3k limit. There's some I've seen that offer 7.5k. That in itself can run into more monies and offer basically the same protection as normal grade Vavoline.

IMO, of course.

You are at the point of changing to pure synthetic. Go with Mobil 1 for your first oil change with a Wix filter. You can decide on Amsoil, Redline or other synthetics once you have researched.

Jroseman, the Lucas oil stabilzer is a great product, and for the little extra money, its well worth it in my opinion. How many miles are on your car? That product is directed toward engines with higher miles, to help against further wear on parts...We run 1 bottle, usually 20%, at my shop, and it makes a noticble difference...

As to changing to synthetic, I use Mobil 1 as well...

my car is not a high milage car. only about 1000 miles since replacing the rings and bearings and having the heads redone.

my main interest is protection in a protection that is a daily driver - but visits the drag strip (we only have 1/8 around here) on ocassion. the change interval is not my concern.

i just want opinions on what is the best oil or combination for protection in a modified engine.

i read the thread on rotella and it was interesting. i had never thought of that product.

1000 miles? You're not ready for a synthetic, yet. Get another 1000 under your belt first. Whatever you do, absolutely do not add any oil additives to a synthetic. They can be detrimental to the additive package already in the synthetic. You may also look into synthetic oils that offer a written warranty against their oil causing damage to your engine...like Amsoil.

I would go with valvoline plus one quart of lucas or maybe just use Rotella-T oil by shell. That's what I'm using unless you have a roller cam then go with Mobil 1.. If you have a flat tappet cam, use Rotella-T........ It has stuff like zinc and manganese that helps with longevity. The oil companies took that out of the oil when roller cams became the norm... I spoke wit Comp Cam's about this today, read this and it tells you all about it. Comp Cam's told me the same thing.. http://www.fordmuscle.com/blog/use-t...pet-cams/11295

the lack of zinc and magnesium in the new oils is a real concern. the shell rotella may be the way to go for max protection and long wear. i change every 3000, oil and filter, but if the rotella has more zinc and magnesium, it may offer better protection.

I'm sure that Rotella-T is the one to go with. Comp Cam's recommends it in their literature in order not to void the guarantee. I don't think Comp Cam owns stock in Shell, but who knows..
