73 mustang need help
when i put gas into the carb it turns over but then it stops, the battery is fully charged. it could be timeing or vacume but were not shure. theres spark and the fuel pump does work. any input is appreciated
Putting gas down the carb or filling the float bowl? If you are filling the bowl and it runs then its not ignition nor timing. Its fuel delivery, if the pump is positively working then its a restriction not letting fuel to the carb. Kinked line, or a severely plugged filter.
If it runs while the key is turned to START, and dies when you turn it to RUN, then its a fusible link gone bad. Not entirely sure where it would be on a 73, my 71 didnt have any fusible links on it when I got it.
Does the carb shoot plenty of gas through the accelerator pump when you move the throttle? It should come out where the #3 is pointing in this pic. This is a Holley, an Autolite carb is similar, and a 2 barrel simply doesnt have the rear two venturii.
If you have fuel coming out of the pump before it gets to the carb, you could have a plugged vent. The Vent on a holley is #2.
Also the float level or needle and seat valve could be stuck. That is located at #4. Tap gently on the side of the carb with the handle of a screwdriver near the fuel inlet, if it has sat for some time, it could be stuck.
Also let us know what carb you have, and what engine. Electric or mechanical fuel pump? How do you know the pump is working correctly?

i have a 302 with a motocraft carb .the carb was just rebuilt by a reputable company. we have a mechanical fuel pump, and we disconnectd the line and turned it over and gas came out. thanks for the help
Does gas come out of the shooter for the accelerator pump? You can see it if you look into the carb venturi and move the throttle arm. If it doesnt, you arent getting fuel into the carb.
reconnect everything fill the the carb through the vent tube start the engine then
(lightly tap with the rubber end of screwdriver) where the needle seats are at. The floats maybe stuck...

If you can get it to run with the throttle open some, get the rpm to around 3000. Put your hand over the choke horn and shut off the air to the engine briefly. You dont want to kill it, just make it drop RPM some then let it have air again. Do that 4 or 5 times, preferably outside because it makes the engine VERY rich and you need to clear it out for a few seconds after putting your hand on it.
Be advised, you can get a laceration on your hand if you have very high vacuum and hold your hand on there too long.
What that does is sucks all the gunk, and crud that is in the idle passages out of the carb. It doesnt fix anything, but can make things run a bit better. If it still wont idle right, then you have to do more work to it. Usually it runs pretty well after doing that.

we found a disconected vacuum hose, we plugged and it ran on its own but it didn't idle. this comes from behind the carb, not on it and theres a bigger hose next to it that goes to the power brakes. my friend said it goes on the back of the carb but we don't see where. were looking for some diagrams where it could possibly go. any input would be great.
