i have used por 15 on my interior floors. now i am getting ready to repaint and detail my engine compartment. i saw a add online about the por product (high heat) i want gloss black and apparentl they have it. anyone ever used this product in gloss? does it work well on engine components. otherwise can anyone make other recomendations on GLOSS engine painting i will never need to do again, for a long time at least.

Krylon gloss black will give you just as good a look as the POR 15 for a lot less money.

I used por 15 on my engine compartment, frame rails etc. Good product. However, the main benefit is rust protection. I had thought of leaving thepor 15 as a top coat, which you can, although it will be affected by sunlight (not really a prob in engine bay though). However, I have found that the color/finish is not consistent. Some areas seem glossy and some flat. It was over bare metal so I don't know what the effecting factor is. So, I will prob top coat with a spray primer and semi flat black. I would think with this combo, you will not have any issues for years to come (I hope).

If it was over bare metal, did you use an etching compound first? I haven't started on mine yet, but I did get the POR15 and the etching spray, as I am taking it down to bare metal as well (I just don't like the idea of rust encapsulation and can't bring my self to paint over any amount of visible rust). I like the idea of POR15 versus high temp or just standard paint in the engine bay, on the frame rails, and on the underside of the car, because it is supposed to be much harder and chip resistant than standard paints.

Yes, I used the "metal prep" por 15 product. This is just phosphate and a mild acid to clean up and convert the rust. Also leave a coating of phosphate on the bare metal which provides excellent adhesion for the por15 versus just bare metal. I now buy Phosphate Plus at home depot. Its the same thing only you get a gallon or so for about the same price as you pay for the pint of Metal Prep.
Good luck.

Thanks, I didn't think to check Home Depot. Oh well, why should anything be cheap when your restoring a classic.
