how safe are our cars
hey fellas,
i was watching a T.V show on the discovery channel today and it was explaing the progress we have made in car saftey, and i was wondering how safe are our cars? Classic Mustangs. they dont have air bags, so they cant be supper safe..... our cars were made during the time period where literally 100's of people were dieing daily in car crashes....

they pretty much arent very safe in the event of a hard crash..........
3 point seat belts help....so does the collapsable steering column in the 68's and later....etc...but still....

Safe enough...... There is risk involved with anything. Our parents survived driving them so it must be fairly safe.
Just dont push the car past it limits.
It your really worried about saftey buy a Volvo.

I tagged the back of a brand new beamer when I was in high school (before I did the restoration). I was maybe going 10-15 rolling up to a light and I was watching the light go green....but the beamer stayed put. I locked up the POS drums and slid right into the back of him. It was a slow rear end, but still my back seat popped out, the passenger seat folded foward and the glove box crashed open.
Brakes are the biggest issue imop. You gotta love steel cars though. My bumper showed that beamer whos boss.[:'(]

One of the nicest things about my 65 is the lack of a shoulder belt. I wish it was like my dads 63 chevy truck and didnt have a belt at all. Driving a classic is like driving a motorcycle, there are risks involved... IMO it adds to the thrill of owning one. I am not a real thrill junky but at the same time I love the raw feel a classic has.
And a BIG +1 to Soaring. I hate to see a classic get cut up, even if it is for saftey reasons. These cars were made before people were all sissified, and saftey was not a large concern.

lol you don't have to hack up much to make these at least a lil safer. Some nice wilwood or ssbc disc brake upgrades are a really nice touch to these stangs, and theres of course the added benefit of better stopping power, which = safer. Racing style lap belts take about 15 minutes to install and again...they are a nice touch.
I know there are somesaftey mods you dont have to screw the car up for...I dont mind those. As a matter of fact I have SSBC brakes. I said I hate to see a car get hacked up.
A little safer is all you will ever get, and it will not even be close to safe by todays standards still.
