engine swap
Okay, I found a nice 67 mustang with a 351 auto in it. I'm a 16 year old kid who weighs 105 pounds(wrestler, gotta keep weight down) and with gas prices and all I can't keep the 351 in it. The guy selling it has included a dissasembled 289 and trans with the car. So i'm wondering how much money and how long it would take a shop to take out the 351 and put in the 289? I know it will vary with the shop, but a rough estimate would be real helpful.
Thanks for any help.

If you have power steering and brakes, your quickness is more important than size/strength.
For the same price as putting in that 289 and its tranny, you could easily install a good fuel injection system. A stockish 351 should get near 20 mpg with sane driving. Plus, with a computer, your dad would be able to monitor your driving habits (and you'll be able to alter the stats so it looks good...but don't tell him that).

He wouldn't put a computer in it. Now his problem with it is the fact that it's primed, which he's pretty sure means its been in a wreck. He's decided the engine is okay, but this primer job means the car is bad. You can't win with parents, ya know?
Did mustangs back then come with power steering standard? My mom had 2 when she was growing up but I can't remember if they had power steering or not. Thanks for all the help by the way guys, this is such a great site.

Primer doesn't mean wrecked with a car that old. I would be worried about primer mainly from a rust standpoint since primer will absorb moisture. Look at the frame rails and undercarriage to see if it's been wrecked.
Anything else to look for? The interior looks pretty nice from the pictures i've seen.
The car's only 5500 bucks and it seems like a great deal to me, but my dad's not so positive about it. I need a good selling point besides my mom had 2 and they never failed her.

We bought a 68 in primer from a friend. Only rust it had was the floorboards, the rest had been professionaly replaced. They just hadnt painted it yet. Your dad just doesnt want you to have the car. Mine didnt want me to have some cars either. Look it over carefully and try to make a decision based upon its condition, not how bad you want it.
btw our 105lb guy had no problem drivin a 75 Gran Prix with a 400 in it. I was 167lbs before the change in classes.. not that small anymore..lol..
Keep the 351, mileage isnt that bad. You can improve on mileage with the addition of a few parts, but like Colorado said, sane driving will get you the best mileage. Full throttle blasts are fun, but they eat up the gas real fast.
