Default Exhaust

Folks, I have a 73 convt. and want to go from single to dual exhaust, any suggestions on what to buy or put on. I am going to stay away from putting on any headers.
Thanks John

Depends on what he is looking for regarding sound. I prefer the X pipe with Ravins behind that.

I almost made exactly the same remark on that grim day when Glen was contemplating an aluminum intake manifold and 4v carb for Ol' Yeller.

To the original poster, if you are trying to save some money, Summit Racing sells a nice, cheap, generic split-dual exhaust that can be made to fit the 65-73 and 67-73 V8 Mustangs and Cougars. "Generic" means the pipes are all left long, so it's a cut and weld to fit your particular car. If you don't have a welder and a chopsaw maybe you can just haul the kit off to a local shop and have them do the work.

If you want to plumb in a crossover, Summit sells generic X-pipe and H-pipe kits as well. I went with an H-pipe kit for my car (40 bucks) and this was practically a no-brainer to splice in. X-pipe might take a little more work.

All of the pipes are 16 guage and mandrel bent, and the kit is available in 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 inch pipe... I went with 2 1/4 for my car.

One thing to bear in mind is that the kit is intended for use with full length headers that exit straight back from the motor. If you have that setup, then the kit will just bolt up to your headers. I have shortie headers on my car so I needed to make some downtubes... I just made them using the stainless steel "over the axle" portion of the exhaust from a 1988 5.0... when a friend of mine had to replace his exhaust on his 1988, I just pack-ratted the stainless sections away. I also stole the actual exhaust tips from his old setup as well.

The mufflers that come with the kit are cheap Summit "Turbo" mufflers... quiet at cruise, medium-loud at WOT. They make a smooth sound, not a growl, so if you want that sound spend the extra money for Flowmasters or whatever. I was trying to save some money and with the kit I ended up making the whole exhaust from headers back for 350 bucks. Of course it also took me a week and a half of trial fitting before I was ready to weld it all up... anyone who makes custom exhaust for a living would have been laughing their a** off at me.

Doesn't look like anything special off the car, but fits the car nicely and certainly got me some good gains...
