Need helping finding 289 engines for sale
I've worked on my mustang to the point where it runs, but thats about it. I'm wanting to change the engine from a 6 cycle to a 289 V8 in the near future. The only problem is I don't want to pay for a new engine, unless the price is affodable. I rather find one that is used and then just get the engine rebuilt. The Internet hasn't really been good to me in finding a mustang 289 engine. Would anyone have a good website with the engine I'm looking for? New or used would do. I already tried ebay....so a little help would do. Thanks

Are you doing the work yourself? or having a builder do the work for you?
If you're spending the money to have a builder assemble the parts, you may want to do a little home work. I'm guessing you could find a good price on a crate motor and just use your sheet metal to finish it.
If you're doing the work, then I'd start at a local bone yard. When you do find one, make damn sure you have the block boiled and checked for any problems before you start any work on it.
It's going to be hit and miss on finding a good buildable block from a bone yard, so don't be in a hurry and not check everything first. Most of the older year blocks have had a hard life and have been discarded for the most part.

FYI the only real difference between a 302 and a 289 is the crank, rods, and pistons. A 302 is even easier to find than a 350 chevy, they came in a multitude of vehicles including trucks, and all maner of late model 5.0 powered cars. Infact one of those is a good candidate because all you really need to switch to geet it to fit in an early car is the oil pan, pickup, and exhuast. of course going from an I6 to a 5.0 is a bit more involved, but still.
yeah 289s are getting scarce.. just drop a 302 in it and be happy. call the junkyards and see if they have an 5.0 or 302s.. I am sure they do, and cheap too.

There are a few out there. Try searching google.
289's are getting rare.
You might have 2 buy a wrecked or a mustang that needs a complete restore job with a 289 already in it.
Here are a few I know of.

you could try craigslist and also a junk yard and why does it have to be a 289 block all you really need is a 302 block with a 289 rotating assembly that you can get from jegs or summit
