Default Questions about SHORTY Headers

Are shorty headers any better than stock manifold?
Will the outlet positions of shorty headers come anywhere close to mating up with standard H pipe (factory) setups? If not, how far off, and how much effort to get it all hooked up and working?

Are shorty headers any better than stock manifold?
There was a write-up in one of the Mustang magazines a few years ago. They compared stock manifolds to K-code manifols to tri-y headers to shorties and on and on. And I believe that the end results showed no horsepower (or torque) gains with shorties over stock manifolds. Sounds strange, but I guess the proof is in the dyno charts. I suppose they'd at least give a nicer sound than stock, though...

I had long tube headers but as the car kept getting lower to the ground the flange began to drag on stuff like the road. So I went to shorty headers so i could tuck the pipes up nice and close to the frame. I couldnt tell a difference between the two. Noting drags on the ground now however. Probably 3hp difference between the two if that much.

Nick, don't the shorty headers come out at a slightly upward angle, whereas stock manifolds come straight out. I would think with any new header the header pipe would have to be manufactured to fit the header. I didn't change to headers when I had new pipes put on, so was just wondering so we can answer this guy's question.

ya i have been told the same thing but guess what you won't really notice it cause shorties flow better but the longtube give you the Scavenge effect which is the diff on stock heads really but shorties will do better with ported heads comapred to a manifold so thats where the diff is

Im not sure I totally understand your question but ill give it a shot. We will use the Crankshaft as a reference point.
I have the ceramic coated headman shortys the left side is not identical to the right side. the right side exit of the header (where the primary pipe couples to) is almost parallel to the crankshaft. the left side intersects the crankshaft line at about 45 degress. it must do this to clear the steering gear and transmission. In both cases the coupling where the primary pipe meets header is above the crankshaft more so on the right side. Of course this requires a trip to the muffler shop. These headers fit up well to the heads no problems.

Im not sure if dyno results would show = performance to stock exhaust manifold. I would GUESS the shorty headers would show more hp (3 or so) improvement simply because the exhaust gas makes a nice sweeping smooth bend on the way out. With stock it makes a 90 degree bend slams into a wall then gets forced out. As BHP increases I would bet headers start to work better. If you have 90BHP then headers prolly wont do you any good.

I hope this is was you were asking.

Pretty much. I was asking if the angle of headers at the point to where they hook up to the pipes is at a different angle than stock manifolds. But, you pretty much answered my question as I had figured it to be. The new headers have to be mated to the pipes at the muffler shop. The collectors on the long tubes are what give the long tubes the advantage over the shorties is my understanding. Also, JBA also makes a header that is not a shorty, nor is it a long tube. Just wondering if that header has any advantage over the stock manifolds and shorties? This is a good conversation. Good information is being passed back and forth.

Not sure about the JBA never seen one. I was told that shorty headers as well as long tube get their advantage over stock by the smooth bends, I was also told that shortys do not work quite as well as the long tube because the header pipes are different lengths on the shortys. If you look, all the pipes on the long tubes should be the same length and that’s the advantage over the short ones. Or so they say, umm sounds plausible to me.

no they have equal length shorties
