fuel injection on 1966
The mechanic where I work has a complete fuel injection setup for a 302 (the engine in my project 66) and I am wondering if I should buy it from him - he has everything including the computer, fuel rails, injectors, (although he said it came out of an explorer so I would probably go with AEM or something to control fuel/electronics). I bought the car with a 302, Ford racing intake and an autolite 7D 4 barrel carb that I need to rebuild. What do you guys think and what have other folks experienced going fuel injection on one of these old cars? Fuel injection would be alot sweeter in concept.
I searched but didn't really find any experiences, mostly just commentary.

I'd suggest if you want to go EFI, you do some research first. I wouldn't jump at the first deal. A 9AL box and all the EEC IV stuff is cheaper, easier to wire, and exceptionally tolerant of ignorance. For a "First" system this is a good way to go (IMO).
also understand you have to install a complete new fuel system, including a properly baffled tank. That can be the biggest expense, and is most definitely the majority of the work on a proper conversion.
Here is a somewhat decent web site to get you started. I think some of his info is dated, and overly basic, but it's a start.

Good luck,
thanks and like the car. noticed you are using a TCP subframe - I bought stage 2/3 and welded it in when I did the underbody - what exhaust are you using with the subframe bits?
TCP is good stuff.
Right now it's 1.5" with a cheap little turbo muffler under the rear seat pan. It goes over the rear, through the pan hard bar, and stops at the gas tank.
Even with the PHB, I'll be able to run the exhaust out to the rear valance.
When the V8 goes in I'll run 2.5" all the way out to the valance. Probably run FPA long tubes, an H-pipe, and Borla muflers with small resonators before the tips. I don't like looking at exhaust, so it will all be tucked up with "turn downs" at the valance.
Sounds like you have a real nice project going. Look forward to seeing pictures.

Ive been looing into fuel injection for some time now but havent made the jump yet.
The site Scott mentions has alot of useful info including what computers to stay away
from as well as part numbers. It also has what each controls job is in the fuel injection
process and explains the process, which will at least give you some basic knowledge if you
dont already have it. A couple of things that I read about the fuel system is you can purchase
a sending unit with a return line built in and if you add an accumulator to the supply side which
can simply be a diesel type fuel filter (screw on - looks like an oil filter) you wont have any surge
that people without baffles in the tank deal with, And one last note is defenitely wire in an inertia switch
to shut off the fuel pump in an accident. Good luck!

thanks guys, I am going to start diving into the technology - my only experience with EFI has been with cars that are already fuel injected (I have a Supra and an STI). The systems are pretty easy to understand and tune but they already have all the bits setup - I wasn't aware of the baffle tank problem for example.
I take it nobody has actually done this to claim that they get 20+mpg, better performance, smoother power curve, etc.?????
Until this guy popped up, I was going with the Edelbrock endurashine carb/manifold setup for the bling factor and when I had this setup before on another car, it was solid!

I've done conversions for other people. Everything from TBI to MPFI, and have done some tweaking on the different systems to mate them closer to the application.
Yes, you will have better driveability, power, and fuel mileage.
I'd suggest using an EFI tank with in tank fuel pump. This will give you the best longevity. Especially for daily driver or weekend cruiser.
Good luck,
Scott

one of the mods in the supra world is putting the larger Walbro pumps in the tank! I am going to see the mechanic tomorrow so I will talk some more, I didn't have a chance to go into detail with him about the parts. He has 2 complete systems, 1 with engine and 1 with just the fuel injection bits. He also has a 1987 Lincoln that I was going to check out for the parts (going to have read up a bit on the old versaille bit - I might take the rear brakes/rear end off him)............
Think carefully before using the rear end off that Lincoln. Look at replacement parts for the brakes and the rear end. Also check into what kind of gears you can get for it.
You know, late model stuff is a dime a dozen. Good deals show up on a daily basis. Taking the time now to do the research and talk with people who have actually done what you want to do will really save you a lot of time, money and frustration.
Just be wary of what you read on these forums before laying out your hard earned money. The magazines are almost as bad. They give you about 1/2 the information you actually need to do a job.
Good luck on your project.

i did the fuel injection convershion useing all stock 91 5.0 mustang parts, it was easy and simple. the onley thing that sucked is i couldent use my stock gass peadle. my car is a 1966 and i got a peadle out of a 87 5.0 and mounted it. its not perfect and ive herd you can use a early 70s peadle that mounts better. all i had to do was splice the ignithion wire. i used an in line pump and weldled a bracket for it. i used the stock fuel sending unit and silver sauterd a return line hose to it. so far no leaks. i did the whole project in 1 weekend and outher than the gass peadle im happy. still got some tweekin to do on that douse anyone have any ideas?
