Default Timing Cover Question

I broke a drill bit trying to extract a bolt that had broken in my timing cover. Do I have to remove the crank pulley and harmonic balancer to remove the timing cover?

Thanks,

Parker

You'll need a new seal as well.

Take the broken bolt out with an easy out, it is the simplest way to remove a broken bolt.

You not only have to remove the crank pulley and harmonic balancer, you have to take the radiator, fan and water pump out just to get to it. Once you get the timing cover off, you may still have enough bolt sticking out to use some large vice grips on it to slowly turn back and forth until it comes out. If not, the the ease out is the next step.

I might try to knock out the drill bit and then try again with the extractor kit.

Isn't an easy out just basically a bolt extractor?

Am I missing a post or something? Here is all I have to go on. You sound like you have a picture or something. >>>>I broke a drill bit trying to extract a bolt that had broken in my timing cover. Do I have to remove the crank pulley and harmonic balancer to remove the timing cover? >>>>
So, I was just answering the question about whether or not the crank pulley and harmonic balancer had to be removed. At any rate, if the drill bit is stuck in the bolt, you will need to knock off the chewed up bit, and use a harder steel drill bit to drill into that one to get it out. Carbon steel bits are worth their weight in gold. Take your time, and don't force it. Yes extractors are the same thing, but you will need the right size. Patience my dear friend, patience.
