Default Engine swap

The motor that's in my 66 fastback is junk. I'm looking at buying a 89 5.0 mustang motor. What will I have to swap around to put the 89 in the 66? I know the oil pan and pickup will have to be changed. What else? I'm going to put a aftermarket intake and carb on it. Thanks for your help.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing, I have a 5.0 from a 94 cobra. Fuel injection can be difficult to do if you dont have all the parts, from the original stang, and a lot of fabricating. I would actually prefer EFI, but my knowledge, patience, and budget is only allowing me to use a carb. If anyone has any info on this that I could use please help us out.

have you heard of the SN65 project? They used a 4.6 motor in a 65 mustang...among MANY other things

i would stick with whateveres on it, if your going to carb it, then just keep the original engine, just send it to be cleaned and machined

That particular car is only a 65 shell dropped over a late Cobra. it isnt a swap of anthing except exterior sheetmetal. Its all cobra underneath, so no wiring or fuel system mods.

EFI isnt terrible tough to set up on an older stang, but it isnt as cheap as a 650 holley and a dual plane intake either.

Water pump turns opposite direction on serpentine belt engines.
Front cover has no fuel pump provision on EFI engines.
no cam eccentric on the EFI engines either. So you need an electric pump. I like the Carter 7lb unit for my street rides.
OR use the cam eccentric and front cover with water pump from the current engine.
Wouldnt be a bad idea to pulg the Air injection at the back of the heads, because you wont be using a smog pump.
You need to use a non computer distributor, dont worry about the gear on it, stock Ford hydruallic roller cams have an iron gear on them. If you are concerned about it, just use the gear from the computer distributor on it.

Keep all the EFI stuff, just incase you want to swap it on later.
thats all i can think of right now.

Thumpin is exactly correct, that car is a Terminator Cobra with a 65 body. It is not a 65 with a Terminator motor in it. Big difference......

In answer to your question:
Oil pan, pick up yes.
Plug the dipstick tube hole on the driverside of the block.
Change timing cover to early 302 with mechanical fuel pump and eccentric. This will include dipstick.
Plug air injection ports in heads.
Have radiator lower hose barb moved to driverside to match early 302 water pump.
Get pulleys and and alt brackets from junk yard.

What tranny do you have? Automatic will need correct 50oz flexplate. M/T needs special equalizer bar pivot bracket and correct pressure plate to mate flywheel.
