Default Can I replace this?

Hey everyone,
I just bought a 66 coupe and I admit I'm in way over my head. Anyway it needs a lot of body work and I though I'd try to tackle it (I've never done this and I don't really know anything about cars but I know people dumber than me who have succeeded so I thought I'd try something I've always wanted to do). So my question is what is the piece located between the front windshield and hood that has the vents in it called? And is this part replaceable? Some idiot who had this car at one time has somehow made that surface flat and void of the vents whatsoever with bondo. I don't know what I'll find upon sanding, but I'll be it won't be pretty. I was hoping to be able to replace this, but as it stands I can't tell if this can be removed. Thanks for any input. I'm sure this won't be my only question.

yeah, The top is the the cowl vent, i guess they call them. Also if you remove it, Go ahead and replace the cowl itself.

it may not be just bondo covering the cowl...i know someone who cut it out and welded in sheet metal in its place...it looks really good IMO

maybe it is sheet metal. Nothing on this car is original, so I'm not really very concerned with keeping the original specs. Maybe instead of fighting it I'll just run with it. Might look kind of good if cleaned up a bit. Are those vents useful at all? I know they are the source of lots of unwanted leaks, but do they serve a useful purpose?

here is one photo. I'll send more when I figure out how to upload correctly. all that primer needs to come off. Last guy was clearly not a perfectionist.

Here are a couple more. The interior is actually in really good shape, and I think the 302 has potential. main thing is body work. Last guy did more harm than good. but he did replace rear quaters and floor pans, so that's a start.[IMG][/IMG]

isnt that where the air comes in for ventilating the cabin (heater or cool air)? that is my understanding.
