The guy I bought my mustang from let it sit outside with only primer on it and some rusted through. What is the best way to remaove the primer and rust?

Sanding, grinding, etc... the problem is not the primer... the problem is the rust, and the extent of it... pics would be helpful for those into body work...

80 grit sand paper and a dual action sander(or the fastest but messiest way air craft paint stripper)

I find sanding to be extra work and extra cost. Buy the Aircraft stripper from walmart(brushable, not spray) and coat it on. Take a putty scraper or some flat blade object and simply scoop the paint off. Then hit it with a fine sanding to smooth the baremetal out.

And aircraft is no messier than all that dam sanding dust...

They do make electric orbital sanders, go to a Lowes or Home Depot. they have all sorts sanders. You can even get one that you can hook up to a shop vac. But the hose is sometimes a pain.
I don't know why people will prime a car and then drive it in all kinds of weather or leave it sitting outside. Primer does not prevent moisture from getting to the sheet metal, the paint does.

I just bought a new one today at Sears and Im very happy with it. Its a 3"x9" Craftsman sander, with 11 sheets, dustbag, and another attachemnt for 40 dineros. Papers is cheap as could be for that too.

And yes, primer is water-retentive. Actual paint is not. Mine actually sits inside my house and there are 2 dehumidifiers so I dont have to worry about it
