Default thermostat gasket question

Dumb question but does the gasket go ABOVE or BELOW the thermostat?

(crawls into the corner from embarassment )

Don't feel to bad. Now that you bring it up I'm having a massive brain fart.

Put the thermostat in, then put the gasket on, then the thermostat housing. The gasket should not be touching the thermostat but on the inside a little bit anyway as it seals at the outer surfaces. I use a thin layer of Permatex Ultra Black on both sides of the gasket.

Now, if you get that little 90 degree hose to go on without leaking, let me know your secret. I fought that SOB for an hour, but finally got it to stop leaking. Man, what a major design flaw that was.

I've never had that little SOB leak. I use a little grease on the hose ends to help with the seal and ease removal of the hoses when I want them to come off (and I've never had a hose come off with my 20lb caps). I've always used worm screw clamps, as well. Those spring loaded things belong on vacuum lines. How are you getting it to leak?

Hell, I don't know. I guess I just couldn't get the exact right angle or something. Also, I had to buy a new thermostat housing because my old 40 year old one kinda fell apart, so I went down to the nearest mom and pop parts place and got another one. When I get it home, I noticed it was made in China, and was a l ittle fatter all over. The little nozzle was bigger than the original, but he sold me a regular 90 degree hose. I should have taken the hose back and got a bigger one, but I was determined to make that sucker work. Yeah, I use the worm clamps, but I didn't use grease. I will know better next time.

Cheap replacement parts can be a problem for sure. I paid a little more for a replica. For a while, I thought maybe you had bought one of those chromy, leak inducing housings.[:'(]

Nah, I don't have any chrome under my hood. Looks ghetto IMO.
Here is what the made in China one looks like after I got it installed. You will notice a water outlet at the top that I plugged. I have no idea what that is for. It certainly was not on my original one.
