Default 302 rebuild

Okay I'm almost at the point where this will start to happen. Does anyone have an estimate on what it will cost me to take my block to a machine shop, and have it redone properly before the rebuild, you know clean it up check for cracks and bored smooth? Anything else I should have done to it before I rebuild?

I was looking the other day at CHP and saw the 306 and 331 street fighter kits (I'm probably getting one of those) and then saw you can get a short-block of these versions for a few hunderd more that com with the cam and heads I was going to pick anyway, already balanced and blueprinted sounded like a great deal to me.

Any recommendations on this from you gurus?

If you have the money for the CHP shortblock then go with the short block setup.

You can get the shortblock redone for about $500, that should be hot tanking, line honing, boring and honing of the cylinders, new cam bearings, and I think even turning of the crank. If I remember right that should include the new main and rod bearings as well. But theres no point in guessing, call around and see who'll give you the best price. ALso, try to find a REPUTABLE shop, its worth the extra $$$$ in the long run.

x2.. Call around and see what they charge. The Cleveland machine work including the heads being reworked was $1000 this spring. That was the entire engine being machined, but only what it needed. its not always needed to line bore, and deck.. among other things..

If you can swing a CHP shortblock or crate engine, they do good work from what I have heard. If it alreayd has the stuff you wanted, its a no brainer isnt it?

yeah I know the 306 is mild but I'm asking myself if I really need the 331, and I know I really don't need the 347. I've looked and the short blocks only cost about another 700 more than the kits, and I figure why not just get the block. I figured after paying for the work to be done and all the parts on my current block it would be about the same anyway

its not much more for a 331 so u might as well go ahead and pick up the extra cube and the 347 dont ast quite as long the 331 is right in the middle ull get good life and decent mileage out of it

I spent about $300 on my last block (taking out the cost for the other machine work on the heads, crank, rods). I do my own cam bearings, but that shouldn't be more than $50 or so.

There is something nice about having new stuff, though. I would definitely go for at least the 331, since it isn't much more, but will give you a bit more torque.

The bottom ring intersects the piston pin on the 347 kit from what I have heard it doesn't have as long as a life as the 331. Definately go with the 331 kit as it will give you many more years of service... at least that is what I am going to do...
