Default 1965 289 block

Ok guys - I have a 1965 date coded 289 block. I was planning on finding a 302 block and building on it a 331 stoker but wanted to check and see if just using the 289 block would be sacreligious... Is that type of block rare / should I just keep it tucked in a corner/sell it or ?

Whatever motor I build it will be replacing the original motor in my C code (which I will just put in the corner and cover with plastic).

Thanks!

i personally dont see anythin wrong with boring the 289 out myself, i've heard 331 is about right for a 289, but if you plan on going 347 use a 302. i plan on a 331 in the future for my car, but havent yet decided if i should yank the 289 and put in a 302 bored over. good luck with your decision.

As you know, the 289's were only produced for a few years, whereas the 302's were made for many years. Although they are the same block, if you can get a 302 to build for a race car, then save the 289 for nostalgic reasons, that is what I would do.

That is what I have heard from a couple of folks but it has been split right down the middle mostly.. I think if I can walk into a 302 block then that is what I will use but still keep it to a 331 as the oil ring intersecting the wrist pin causes me too much grief when it comes to engine longevity.

Anyone else?? Bueller, Bueller...

I have a '68 302 that I'm looking to trade for a '65 289 should the results convince you to get rid of it.

not all 347 pistons intersect the oil ring. when we build one with forged pistons we use malhe which do not intersect the oil ring.

That I didn't know - I guess that the one I saw used the probe (?) pistons that intersected. Good to know that there is a different option on that stroker.

My understanding is that 289's are not a good option for boring out...you are more likely to run into overheating problems. Thinner walls or such??

A good 289 block is a very very rare commodity over here. 302's are out there everywhere and cheap.

I'd go the 302 to 347 route personally...not a lot of difference in price for the kit is there? Why settle for enough torque to pull down an average house when you can just as easily have enough to tackle a small office block.
