Frame & Chassis Inspection
Just bought a 68 convertible. Would any reputable frame / axle / chassis repair shop be able to do a proper inspection of the undercarriage of my 68 Mustang? Are there areas that they should be told to check that they would not normally check on other vehicles? Are there any known problem areas with 68 Mustang undercarriages? I want to get my ride checked for safety sake and for my wife's peace of mind before I get into having the engine repaired, transmission overhauled/rebuilt, etc., etc. Thanks to anyone who can give me some good guidance based on hard knocks!
As far as the undercarriage is concerned, just get it up on a lift and inspect for rust. Poke at the floor boards, torque boxes and frame rails with a screwdriver to see if you can make a hole in them. The frame rails rust from the inside out, so that could be overlooked if not aware of it. Grab hold of the suspension parts and give them a good shake to see if any of the joints are loose. Give the drive shaft a good shake to see if the U-joints are worn. Check to make sure the shocks and springs are in good order. Pull the hubs off the brakes and check the shoes for wear. Just common sense stuff actually.
Where can I get a diagram of the things you're talking about? I'm new at this game and a lot of stuff is Greek to me. Thanks for you courteous and speedy reply.
