Rear Quarters
Hey guys,
I've got some pretty nasty looking rear quarters and was wondering if I needed just the skins or the full quarter.
I don't understand the difference. Both of mine had an inch of bondo around the flare and crappy patches behind the wheel.
Thanks

A whole 1/4 panel is not only the outer skin but the structural stuff as well, usually to install a complete 1/4 you might even have to cut into the roof. And the skin is just the outer sheet metal, no strutural stuff underneath.
-P.
PS: Installing a complete 1/4 is VERy timeconsuming and pretty damn expensive. Installing a skin isnt as much, its not cheap.

The rear quarter is one piece of metal......no skin. So, you are going to have to replace the entire quarter panel. I think I have an article in the FAQ about how to replace it. It is not something a novice should tackle.
My 65 coupe was hit in the passenger quarter panel. Not realizing exactly what was included with the NPD full face repair panel (skin), I picked up a full quarter panel for the passenger side and a skin for the driver side.
The only difference was the outside tail light panel is not included with the skin and it only has about 2 inches of metal on the top edge. The full quarter panel includes the outside tail light panel and the rest of the top edge including the trunk lip and the part that welds up to the roof.
Had I known I would have gone with the repair panel only since the rest of the metal is good. The full quarter cost double the repair panel.
Depending upon how original you want it and how good the rest of the metal is, you should be able to go with either.

When the rust looks like that, the problem will go deeper as well. You need to check your wheel housings, rocker panels, rear torque boxes, trunk area. Just because it looks good from the outside it may be a mess inside. It will rust from the inside out. Unfortunately many people patch things up to find their nice paint job bubbling with rust a year or two later. They don't call rust cancer for nothing. If you weld in patch panels to make it look good it will continue to rust.
I would go with the skin, i had real bad quarters that were just as bad as yours and i just welded on some new skins. You cant even tell they were replaced even from the inside. Your quarters look pretty nice and solid on top so ther is no snese touching that good metal. It took about 3 hrs per side to take out the old one line up and weld the new ones in.
