i6 vs 289 or 302
yea with that head u can get around 30mpg but u will be sacrificing the power alot and on the other side of the spectrum if u go more for performance ull loose fuel economy which is true for just about any motor made
Speaking from experience...I did the swap in the midst of restoring my 'vert and have no regrets...
I managed to convince myself to do the swap because I figured I was restoring the car so I was going to have to replace/rebuild all of the suspension, fuel system, electrical wiring, wheels and brakes anyway which is where most of the headaches/cost are incurred. Leaving most of the cost of the conversion to be placed on the actual purchase of the engine
So I set out to find an engine, and I got lucky (I think) I found a warmed up 302 with only 10k miles since a rebuild for $400.
Now I must warn you, during the process you will encounter many headaches and in the end you most likely will not be getting 23 mpg unless you have an overdrive tranny or take a serious hit on performance (which goes against why you would want the V8)
All things considered I probably spent $2000 more than I would have if I would have kept the I6. That number could go up or down depending on the different routes you take, I saved money for now by keeping my I-6 3 speed manual and buying a used engine, but I also could have saved some money had I not spent so much on the dress up kit, new carb (the engine came with one) and a few other things...
For me the rumble of a v8 while driving is priceless...
First I think you should set your budget and priorities and then see if you can do the swap within those requirements
