289 2v upgrade
I' looking for Ideas on upgrading my 289 2v
I'd like to keep the motor looking as original as I can but add some HP.
Any specific Ideas?
So far I have added a petronix ignition and thats it.
And no I'm not looking to replace the motor, Just beef the 289.
Thanks!

This won't answer your question, but could I ask you one?
Is your 289 worth keeping in your mustang? I would like to know because I'm about to buy a 68 w/ stock 289 and i just needed to know if it was going to be an acceptable engine. What's your 0-60? Do you know?

I think it is worth keeping in my mustang, the car only has 74k miles on it and is all original with no rust, but alot of people are going restomod with thier cars. Adding new motors, interiors, ext. all depends on what you want to do with it.
as for 0-60 I'm not sure. I am planning on taking the car to the track soon to get 1/8 and 1/4 times on the original set up..just for fun.
I'll let you know what times I get.

The 289 is the best motor for a older mustang. Not so good for a 73. the car is to big, but for a light mustang it's great. How stock do you want it to look? You can change carb. the intake and the cam. With the intake , you can go with a stock one if you like or paint a new one. Put your air cleaner over it and whos going to look.
This is an easy one...Dual plane aluminum intake, torque cam, headers and a 600 holley. Top it off with a Jacobs ignition. With these changes, you won't believe the power you will have on tap. Very streetable with better millage. And, expect some surprising times at the strip!
I have been looking at the Edelbrock Manifold/carb/cam/lifter kits and heads.
also thinking of going to the Hipo exhaust manifold.
So the only changes you would see *if you knew what to look for* would be the manifolds everything else would be hidden.
Another big change I would like to do is the rearend its 2:79-1 8" and I'd like to change the gearing to at least 3:25-1, I'm not sure what gearing will fit the 8" rearend.
But thanks for the input all!

its a 289 2v with C4 auto / PS/AC/PDB and 2:79-1 rearend with 74k miles.
The car has had no mods done to it, its totally original so only puts out about 200HP.
I'm trying to keep it "looking" original but add some giddyup to it.
I did make one mod, I added petronix to get rid of the points.
