Default 302 / 351 interchangeability

I need to know about the bolt on items that will interchange between the 289/302 and the 351 Windsor engines. I know the intake manifolds and the distributors are different but what about the oil pan? The timing covers look the same as do the water pumps. Is the oil pump and pickup tube the same? Thanks in advance.

The 351W block is taller than the
289/302 block to accommodate the longer stroke of the 351W
302
4" bore, 3" stroke
351W
4" bore, 3.5" stroke

The 351W uses the same motor mounts as a 302, and uses the same bell-housing
bolt pattern, so the swap from a 302 to a 351W is simple. There are
specific details with regard to exhaust, water pump inlet, accessory
brackets and flywheels and harmonic balancers depending on the year of
interest and the model of car. The longer stroke of the W gives you more torque off idle and more power overall at a lower RPM, so there's much more "go" right under your foot, and the weight penalty is very small. Parts are plentiful and cheap. Haowever, the W is wider and requires a 351 specific intake. They are not the same block at all and the parts are not interchangable.

351 heads can be used on a 302, but not necessarily vice versa. The 302 uses smaller diameter head bolts.

Windsor heads will only fit Windsors (without major mods).

The oil pan, pump and pick up tube are different IIRC.
Cleveland heads can be used on regular small blocks with mods and specific intake manifolds, but the reverse is not desirable.

Cleveland style heads also require different valve relief pockets in the pistons, but they can all be bolted to any of the blocks mentioned provided you consider the bolt diameter issue

My pistons had to be dished to stay at 10 to 1 CR and I have .170 valve to piston clearance. Always check this before final assy.
