I just finished taking apart my interior and i have some rust to deal with how is the process typically done? do i apply some kind of chemical to eat away the rust then put an a layer of rust encapacitor? thanks heres some pics

I knock all the rust off with sanding or blasting, replace any metal that is too thin or has holes in it. in places I cant get into so that can all happen, you can use the rust encapsulator or POR tye stuff. its not a bad idea to use that as a base on the parts you are showing..

nice Bayliner, how big is it? father in law has a bunch of them, hes a boat dealer of sorts and charterboat captain..

 

Yeah its a 18 ft or 19 i think its a 1998 Its very nice more of a multi purpose boat you can fish and ski and cruise in it. What would you recomend going with something that chemically eats away rust?

 

As odd as it may seem, you just have to take all the paint chips off, then brush on the rust encapsulator, let it dry, then put on another coat and let it dry real well before you use any paint. The rust encapsulators such as POR 15 work best if you don't disturb the rust by sanding or wire wheeling it. Whenever the metal turns black, then you know the chemical effects of the encapsulator has done its job. If the metal has rusted through, then of course you will need to replace the metal. There are many products out there that are rust encapsulators. In the FAQ section I have about 4 such products listed. You can also just go to your local Ace hardware store and get a product they sell that is called Rust-Away. Chemically, they are all the same.
