mild cam installation advice needed
Hi,
i got my Mustang about 1 year ago, and been working on it ever since. It"s my first car
i"m working on so I don"t have that much experience.
It's a 1966 C-Type Coupe (289 2bbl, C3 auto trans)
Recently I started working on the engine compartment. I already got an Edelbrock Performer
Intake 2121 and a 1406 carb installed. I also got electronic ignition (pertronix) and Try-Y headers.
I am thinking now of getting a mild cam that fits the engine, to spice it up a little more.
But my knowledge of engines, especially the inside, is quite limited.
So therefore my question: How difficult is it to install a mild cam?
could someone like explain in brief steps what I would need to do.
I am from europe, so my Mustang is drinking standard european 91 octane unleaded gasoline.
Would there be any other things I would need to upgrade?
By the way, the engine and transmission are original, not rebuilt.
Thanks in advance!
Hannes!

The heads stay on. If you need to change your springs you can get a tool to change them on the engine. I changed my springs with this tool before. You take the plug out of that cylinder and screw an air fitting into the spark plug hole. Once the cylinder is pressurized(hopefully your rings and valves are good), you can compress the spring with this tool and your valve will stay in place. Then you can change the spring, seals, and keeper all at once. There is a lot more to changing the cam. I suggest you buy some books or do research on the net.
first, remove radiator, then fan, then water pump, pullley, alternator, alternator, and AC or power pumps, waterpump, timing cover, timing chain, then finally, the old cam.
I actually thought that installing a cam is not such a hard job. But i sounds to me there's more
skill required than i have.
But on the other hand - you never learn something without trying.
So what it comes down to for me is, i think I will wait some time until i get the cam - but I'll
get it for sure.
But since I also recently got a classic motorcycle (a BMW from the 50s) I'll first take care of
that a little bit....
Thanks guys for the help...

It is not hard. You just have to take things apart systematically and assemble carefully. However, there is a little more to it than can be detailed here. There is a great book called "Rebuilding Your Small Block Ford" You may want to get that and read through it. Everything you need to know is in there. Just read, understand the steps, stay organized and ask questions when you don't know or understand something. I once did it when I had no experience. We all have to start somewhere. You can do it to.
