Default Hidden Roll Cage - Gonna Try It !

So I decided I will put in a hidden roll cage within the frame. Here are some shots of the work I did the past week.
The toe pans and rear torque boxes are already done so I could only cut the rocker panel off so much. But it doesn't matter really, the areas pertinent to the install are all reachable.

I tested out a 1 3/4 diameter pipe (from my old 4 point roll cage) and it fits perfectly. It is the max diameter you can get in there, unless you cutout the support inside the rocker. Threw in a pic of the A piller skin. Many, many, oh so many spot welds!

Anyone have any idea what resale value a hidden roll cage adds to a restomod ?

Im not sure, but does that cause any warping on any of those panels/frame parts? -Jon

I hate to burst your bubble, but it will add exactly "ZERO" value to the car.

Here's why.

1. Someone buys it be a show car....if you can't see....it's useless to them "but but but....I deserve more mod points...I have a roll bar...you just can't see it"
2. Someone buys it be a car they drive on the street....its a street car.....no value to the purchaser in having a roll bar beyond the same value they would get with subframe connectors.
3. Someone buys it to race it, cause its a restomod and its fast.....no value. If they race in any class that regulates the use of a roll bar, your hidden item will not pass tech, if they race in a class (or for fun) where no roll bar is required, you have added significant weight to the car which will slow them down.

The only person this will add any percieved value too, is you, and your bragging rights about what you did to your car.

Sorry but I just can't see how that will work with the angle of the pillar? If you roll it over, with that angle, the steel will fold. I could be wrong, but angles do play a part in structural stability. A steel building is stronger on a vertical plane but will sway side to side. I've seen steel structures come down in wind storms. I'd put a shelby style roll cage in the car to increase the restomod value.

Thanks for the input, you make good points. I didn't really have a bubble to burst though. My biggest reason for doing this is accident protection. This will be a daily driver and I'd like to feel safe/be safe in it. My main issue is side impact protection. A side impact from an SUV would destroy those door pillars. There is just nothing there. So that's basically it. I plan on having this car as a daily driver for decades to come.

Well, I don't know about warp but they definitely won't be exactly the same as before removal. But this doesn't matter much since I took pretty good care to keep them good enough to weld back on. There isn't anything there that would require perfect alignment except maybe the A piller dash extensions. I made some measurements from the firewall and will just weld them back as best I can. Mostly likely I will do a dry run with a windshield / cowl install before I full weld the pillars in to align everything. The rocker panel skins will be replaced.

There is no goal for strength so it's really more that it will be stronger then without. The pillars would certainly collapse much more easily without the cage. In addition, there is benefit to side impact protection. As for an interior roll cage, I had one and didn't like it. I want this car to be a daily driver with lots of room inside to seat up to 5.

your car is also old school ***** out metal, where as new cars are all plasticy. if i were you id be more worried about good restraint (seatbelts!!) because that steering column aint goin no where and you are.

The steering column has crossed my mind. I want a collapsible one if I can get my hands on it. It's odd, but I'm surprised the after market ones like the Ididit brand don't make them collapsible (if I'm wrong someone let me know).
I plan on putting in 3-point seatbelts all the way around. Extra reinforced. The rear hump passenger will probably get a 4 point harness.
