Default 8 inch rear end question...

Quote from this forum's FAQ Hot Rod Magazine article:

"With 28-spline axles, the 8-inch is a moderately capable design but will reach the breaking point at the 300hp level"

Anyone have any direct experience with this? I just booked my time at the machine shop for my motor to be rebuilt this winter and will probably have 300-350HP tops, and I know my car has a 28-spline 8 inch rear end...

In a nutshell, what will I need to buy to avoid breaking the diff? (I'm asking this as I read on in FAQ...)

Cool article. My car is a 67 289, so I don't need some of the upgrades he mentions for th 66. Sounds like I might want to consider a new diff? Also, this article says up to 350HP...I think I'd be safe there...hard to say.

Drive it until you break it - then go fix it or upgrade. Save the money in the meantime.

350 is even a little underated. I would say that you could push them to 400hp. The axles are the weakest link.

+1 on that Mojoe
I couldnt keep them in the car.
Are there aftermarket axles for 8" the same as 9s?
maybe that would be worthwhile if the center is sound but 68Scode has the right approach!

I think the bigger question is auto trans or manual? If its auto, no sweat. If its a do it yourself shifter, get the bigger/better axles.
