Default AC Advice

My wife suprised me what an original 65 mustang AC (I have a lame aftermarket one ATM). It is is very good condition, needs some cleaning but the chrome and face plate looks very nice. I will have to replace the vents because the chrome has worn off them. Ill give the brackets a good coat of paint.

So the first question. How hard are the vents to replace? I cant imagine it being very hard, but thought I would ask.

Also the current AC is R12 but running very low on freeon. I was thinking I could take it and have them capture the R12 that is currently in there. install the new under dash unit replace all the hoses. Then have them refill it with the captured R12. I have enough R12 around the house to fill it the rest of the way.

Pros
Keep Stock Look
Cools good

Cons
R12 is more expensive than gold if I need another refill down the road.
I wonder if I will always be able to get R12 at any price.

The other option I have seen is to use 134 with the same compressor.

Pros
Keep Stock Look
Easy refills

Cons
I hear it doesnt cool worth a damn and I live is Texas.

The last option is a new compressor kit I believe they are called Saden

Pros
Cools good
Easy Refill

Cons
Not a stock look.

So is there anything that I missed or that I am wrong about? Also if you guys have pics of the Saden compressor installed that would be great to see.

I havnt checked the underdash unit yet so I will be going through it this weekend checking all the parts out. Is there anything in particular that goes out on these alot? It looks like I can get any part I need.

I forgot to post a pic. It is in better condition than it looks from the pic. The spots on the chrome wipe right off.

I switched over to 134A a few years back, and it blows just as cold as the R-12. If I were you, I would go ahead and make the change over now.

Soaring did you switch to a new compressor or do U still use the piston style? What all has to be done to convert the piston style to 134?

I'd get the new compressor, the old ones just weren't ment to handle the pressure of the new stuff, and they aren't as bulky as the old style. Just make sure youre condenser is in good working order, and if you're running a fan clutch it's in good working order too. the sadeen kit runs about 500 and comes with everything you need -condenser and fan clutch...good luck, gotta get mine fixed when I time (stupid broken condenser)......
