Default dipstick length

I know that probably sounds dirty but if anyone has a 68 302 can u please measure the length of your dipstick from the end to where it stops in the tube? The one in my car is 22 inches but I bought an aftermarket one that is 20 inches. I don't trust the previous owner so I want to make sure. Thanks allot. Scott

Change your oil and after you start it up to fill the filter, let sit for about five min. and see where the oil hits on the different dip sticks.

Are you saying just put in four full quarts? Then see where it hits?

Well if you aren't going to change the filter, yeah. Or if you know that it has five quarts just see where it hits on the sticks.

I haven't changed the oil in it yet (I just bought it) so I don't know how much she holds. Thanks.

How much oil did it show on the one that came with the car? And how come you don't trust the guy you bought it from?

It holds 5 quarts with a filter change. The dipstick on my 289 is 20" and the parts places list the 289 and the 302 as the same dipstick. Change the oil and filter, then use that 20" dipstick and see if the pan is full. I'll bet it is.

I don't remember what it read on the dipstick but when I drained it it was a black as sludge. I don't trust the PO bcuz he was a shifty character and he lied/with held some info about the car. (and not good info) Thanks Soaring for checking.

If the dipstick is 22 inches long is the **full** mark still at the same spot as the 20 inch one? or is it further down? -Jon
