Default Jumping into the water

I just made a deal on a 66 Mustang hardtop to give my wife for Christmas. It has a 200ci straight six that isn't running right now (don't know what is wrong with it yet). The body has very little rust and almost no damage. The front fenders are original, the glass is intact and the chrome trim on them is all in place. I figured it would be a project we could try together. She is actually excited about it too.
I have to figure out where to start so I may be asking alot of questions of everyone.

Welcome and good luck. Let everyone know what your intentions are for the car and we will give you a good idea where to start.

orrrrrrr you could keep the six, sixes get such a bad rap, but hey if you want an 8 you're gonna have to beef up a lot more of the car.

Thanks for the welcome.
I plan to pick it up on Thurs. evening and will post pics after I get it. We have discussed keeping the six, depends on condition and what is wrong with it, and striping interior all out and redoing if from the inside out. The original front seats have been replace with some aftermarket high back bucket seats, no radio, wipers need replacing etc....alot more than I can list. The body looks pretty good overall with very little damage visible. I want to convert the brakes to disc brakes and maybe redo the suspension but that is all to be determined in time. (and $$$$$) We plan to have fun with it.

even in the end replacing a six will still be cheaper than a 8 swap, and you can make sixes mean

Most women aren't interested in power, but in looks and reliabiliability. You should be concerned about the brakes and suspension upgrades before you worry about power. Just get the 200 cid 6 banger overhauled with all new parts such as carburetor, starter, etc. Upgrade the suspension to V8 parts. Even though you won't necessarily need the beefier parts, it wiil make the front end a lot safer. Replace the front shoe brakes with disc brakes. Put in 3 point seat belts. Get a nice paint job in the color of her choice, and upgrade the interior if it needs it. Most women like tunes, so consider an upgraded radio with CD player etc. And yes, get her to help you with the restoration. She will treasure it more if she has an investment of time and work.
